A Nutritious Digital Upgrade to the Food Tray Paper Inserts.

McDonald's

THE challenge

Support the Product Development and Business Teams as their scalable creative and design partner, across time zones and agile timelines.

1

Nutrition Tracker Integration

Sync nutrition data, for ex. external fitness tracking apps, so users can monitor intake without extra steps.

2

Real-Time Customization

People can modify ingredients and see updated nutritional information instantly.

3

Accessibility

Access to customizable nutrition information across multiple languages and points of access.

Insight

Users struggle to find relevant nutrition information quickly and to customize meals according to dietary restrictions or health goals. The website's current design lacks intuitive navigation, leading to frustration and a lack of engagement among health-conscious users.

Roles: UX/UI Designer, User Researcher, Interaction Designer, Creative Director

User Research

  • Conducted interviews with 20 McDonald’s Canada customers who prioritize nutrition.
  • Gathered feedback on their motivations, such as dietary needs (Carbohydrate, low-calorie, etc.), ease of information access, and menu options.
  • Key Insight: Users want quick access to detailed nutritional information, the ability to personalize ingredients, and an easy way to track their intake.

Competitive Analysis
  • Analyzed similar apps from competitors like Tim Hortons, Burger King, and Starbucks.
  • Found that competitors emphasize dietary filters, ingredient transparency, and personalized recommendations.

Personas
  • Sarah, the Health-Conscious Mom: Wants easy access to ingredient details and customizations for her kids.
  • Mike, the On-the-Go Professional: Prioritizes quick decisions and frequently checks calorie counts to stay on track with fitness goals.

Ideation & Solution Development

Feature Ideation

Based on research insights, I proposed several new features:

  • Ingredient Customization: A feature allowing users to add or remove ingredients (e.g., no cheese, extra vegetables) and see real-time nutrition updates.
  • Dietary Filters: Users can filter items by dietary preferences, such as low calorie, vegetarian, or low sodium.
  • Nutrition Tracker Integration: Sync nutrition data with popular fitness tracking apps, so users can monitor intake without extra steps.

User Journey Mapping

Created user journeys for personas to ensure the proposed features aligned with their needs and goals.

Wireframes & Initial Prototypes

  • Designed wireframes focusing on simplified navigation and easy access to key features.
  • Created low-fidelity prototypes, emphasizing a minimalistic layout for quick access to nutrition info.

Design & Iteration

UI Design

  • Color Scheme: Used a vibrant, health-conscious color palette (green for vegetarian, blue for low-calorie, etc.) for dietary categories.
  • Iconography: Clear, intuitive icons for dietary filters and customization options.
  • Typography: Increased font size for readability, especially for nutrition details.

High-Fidelity Prototypes

  • Designed high-fidelity prototypes incorporating McDonald’s brand identity but with a more health-focused, clean aesthetic.
  • Included interactive prototypes to demonstrate the new customization options and filters.

User Testing

  • Conducted usability tests with 15 participants using Maze, asking them to complete tasks like finding low-calorie options and customizing an order.
  • Minor adjustments were made based on feedback, like improving visibility of the nutrition tracker.

Final Solution

Features Added:

  • Enhanced Dietary Filters: Allows users to filter menu items by diet type.
  • Real-Time Customization: Users can modify ingredients and see updated nutritional information instantly.
  • Nutrition Sync: Integrated with popular fitness apps for seamless tracking.

Design Highlights:

  • Simplified navigation and categorized menus make it easy to find dietary information.
  • Personalized recommendations based on user dietary filters.
